How to Install Your Electric Fireplace

One of the greatest selling points that electric fireplaces have is the fact that they are quick and easy to install, often requiring very little technical skill and never requiring any kind of structural alterations to the building, unlike the installation of wooden or gas hearths and fireplaces. The only real tools you need to install your own fireplace are the kit itself, a good drill, some cleaning rags (preferably of lint-free material), and a couple of screwdrivers.

Start off by picking the location of the fireplace. As this is likely to be the focal point of your room, make sure it’s a good, visible location and maximizes the effect of the lighting and heat. However, remember this is an electric fireplace--you will need to have an outlet nearby! Also, check that the surface on which it is being placed is suitable for taking a heater—tile, stone or heatproof matting is the best, safest bet.

Check every kit piece is present against the assembly instructions. The base unit itself normally comes pre-assembled, but most of the other pieces will need to be assembled. Follow the instructions to assemble everything as needed. Once the cabinet (the exterior wooden bit) is assembled, set it up against the wall as close to the outlet as possible. If you want to hide the cord, you will need to install the unit directly over the outlet if possible – this may involve some minor adjustment and carpentry of the cabinet.

Take the glass off the front of the fireplace base unit and remove the logs, before plugging the unit in to the outlet. Tuck the firebox into the cabinet, making sure it fits as according to the manufacturers’ instructions. If a liner was included with the fireplace, ensure that it is correctly positioned. Consult the installation diagrams to determine how to correctly arrange the logs over the unit, and flick the power on to test the unit. Check that the fireplace is working as it should, then turn the unit off and replace the glass front.

Your fireplaces should now be correctly installed—it really is that easy! If you have any concerns do not be afraid to check with the manufacturer—most offer some kind of technical support line that you can call if you have any major concerns about the installation of the unit. Enjoy your new fireplace, basking in the knowledge that you installed it yourself!
