It allows the designers to truly express themselves, and fireplace design historically affects the décor of the entire house.

            The mantel shelf is one of the most customizable aspects of fireplace design. A mantel shelf is traditionally plain and rectangular, a colonial style, but many interior designers have altered the shape, adding curves and molding. Some fireplace designers have had reliefs carved into the top of the mantel shelf, while others may have the mantle shelf being supported by statues beneath it. Mantels shelves can also be used for fireplace designers to place antiques, heirlooms and bric-a-brac on them.

            The mantel material is another point of interest for fireplace designers. Stone mantels are extremely high-end, and work well in older homes. Fireplace designers prefer fine woods for mantels in newer homes, which gives the architecture a sleek look.

            Fireplace design can not only say something about the architecture, but something about the homeowner, as well. A corner fireplace can indicate someone concerned about space requirements, while a side fireplace indicates a homeowner who has a sense of respect for tradition, as well as a flair for interior design.
